The Republic of Croatia is a young democratic state of European refinement and history.

Geographically, Croatia always had a very important strategic definition for it location on the crossroads between the Alps in the west and the Balkan Peninsula in the east, the Pannonian Plain in the north and the Adriatic Sea in the south.

It stretches over 56 961 km2 of land, with another 31 067 km2 of territorial waters. The coast stretches over 51 835 km and it is embellished with 1 185 islands, islets, and reefs.

Croatian population is about 4 400 000, of which more than a million are inhabitants of Zagreb region. Besides being the capital of Croatia, Zagreb is also the administrative, cultural, academic and transport centre of the country.

Although Croatia is using its natural resources for tourism, it is primarily industrial country.

Besides tourism and organically grown food, shipbuilding industry belongs to one of Croatia's main strategic definitions.

Town on the banks of four beautiful rivers was founded in 1579 and it was designed as an ideal Renaissance six-pointed star fort-town.

During the 16th and 17th century the town was ruled by military authorities. When the original purpose of the fort itself begun to fade away in the 18th century, the town started spreading into the suburban areas of the fort.

Karlovac is situated about 50 km south of Zagreb, at the crossroads of main road an-route from the midlands to the Adriatic Sea, and on the shortest route between Slovenia in the west and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the east.

From the former military fort centre, Karlovac has evolved into a town of transport and trade, with high cultural and educational standards. But above all, Karlovac remains mainly industrial town known for its metal industry, brewery, dairy plant and food industry.
