ROV maker Saab Seaeye said Monday that it will showcase its new, extremely powerful and intelligent electric manipulator at the Marine Technology Conference in Houston, May 2-5, 2022. The micron precision of the eM1-7 comes from the fact that each of its seven joints have extremely precise force and position feedback combined with their own distributed microprocessors.

Ulstein has unveiled a vessel concept it claims can make the vision of zero-emission cruise operations a reality. The 149m 3R design will feature a thorium molten salt reactor (MSR) to generate large quantities of clean, safe electricity. This enables the vessel to operate as a power bank/charging station for new battery-powered cruise ships.

A hexapod robot has demonstrated how it can autonomously inspect wind turbine bolts without the need for technicians to loosen and retighten the thousands of bolts on each wind turbine. The robot will also reduce maintenance time, critical structural failures and extend the life of offshore turbines. The project is being executed by BladeBUG and EchoBolt, both fast-growing UK SMEs with their own independent technology. BladeBUG and EchoBolt have completed successful trials at the ORE Catapult National Centre for Renewable Energy in Bryce and their Levenmouth Demonstration Turbine. This collaboration provides them with an additional product to add to an impressive list of solutions for the wind energy industry. It also proves that a single platform like BladeBUG can continue to perform multiple functions in wind farms.

MAN supplying engines for RoRo vessels

Written by

MAN Energy Solutions will supply four dual-fuel MAN B&W 6S60ME-GI engines for two 8,000-lane-meter hybrid ro-ro vessels for Luxembourg shipping group CLdN. Compared to the largest ships currently in service, the new ships will further reduce carbon intensity by 40% while meeting NOx Tier III standards. The two 234-meter vessels are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2025.
