Electric drive by the end of 2017

Two ferries that will sail to Denmark and Sweden will use electric powered propulsion by the end of 2017. The Öresund Dry Docks, in Landskrona, Sweden, have been selected to modernize the two ferries. M/F Tycho Brahe and M/F Aurora will be equipped with a 4.16 MW battery during February of 2017. When the batteries are empties, they will be charged at stations, which charge about 1200 kWh in a very short time period. The ferry is charged when it enters port. During the 20 active minutes between the ports, the batteries are depleted by about 30% of their capacity. The full capacity of the batteries on each ferry amounts to 4,160 kWh. The ferries will operate between Denmark and Sweden, using only battery power, and will transport about 7.4 million passengers and 1.9 million vehicles annually.

Zorya-Mashproekt Begins Testing of 32 MW Gas Turbine Engine

Zorya-Mashproekt announced the initial of test-benching a 32 MW Gas Turbine Engine in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, where it will undergo the complex of tests aimed at proving the serviceability of the newly designed components. What is important is the overall reliability and durability. The design efficiency of the engine comes to about 38.4%, which exceeds by 2.5% the efficiency of 25MW engines. Greater efficiency was achieved through the development of newer and more robust components and materials. Once the production of the 32 MW engine is complete, the final results will give the company a clearer picture that will help in the development of future models, says the company.

MAN Adds Three New Engines to its Programme

MAN Diesel & Turbo has added three new engines to its large-bore engine programme that are aimed at, among other types, ultra large container vessels (ULCVs) and container feeder ships. The Mk 10 are weight optimised, compared to their Mk 9 counterparts, and form the new design platform for a new Mk 10 engine portfolio. Key to the new platform is the development of the top controlled exhaust valve (TCEV) and fuel booster injection valve (FBIV) components. The MAN B&W G90ME-C10 type, MAN B&W S60ME-C10 type and MAN B&W S70ME-C10 type units are a new generation of engines that ultimately will involve the upgrading of all S type and G type engines to the Mk 10 platform. The Mk 10 platform is based on a much more mass optimised design platform that results in lighter engines with reduced overall length, width and height.
